Sorrento was born with a legend. Don't forget that we are in Campania a land which owes its roots to the mythological hero Aeneas and the song of the ancient Greeks. It is a song that is the myth that accompanies the birth of Sorrento: the song of the Sirens!
If you're interested in churches, don't miss the Saint Filippo and Giacomo Cathedral. It was built on the remains of an ancient Greek temple and has a neo-Gothic facade, built in 1924.
Visit Saint Antonino's Basilica, dedicated to the patron saint of Sorrento, dating back to the 11th century.
Among the paintings and frescoes worth mentioning is the one by Camillo Gervasetti from 1622 and the 5 canvases with "Scenes from the life of Sant'Antonino" by De Longe in 1693.
TRADITION AND HANDICRAFT
Although using new techniques, the Sorrento inlaid marquetry is still carried out today by skilled craftsmen, without however abandoning the tradition handed down to them by their predecessors.
The inlay marquetry is representative of the greatest work produced by craftsmen in the Sorrento peninsula.
At the beginning of the twentieth century there were about a dozen workshops with as many shops that marketed the product.
About a third of the production was sold locally, the majority was exported to the rest of Italy and abroad.
It is this heritage of experience and technique that has been preserved as an integral part of the local culture.
The other main industry in Sorrento is the agri-food sector, which is enjoying new dynamism thanks to its considerable success which has seen companies and workers in the sector increase dramatically. Among these there is, for example, the production of preserved products like the famous "limoncello", a flavoured liqueur with freshly picked lemon zest.
Numerous companies have been born in recent years to produce and market these products with a surprising response.
Another sector of considerable interest and in constant development consists of the dairy industry with the artisan production of the typical Sorrento "fior di latte" and soft spun cheeses obtained from the transformation of cow's milk.
The dairy industry, therefore, is still a positive reality in family-sized businesses passing their skills onto the next generation.
The Sorrento Peninsula boasts a centuries-old tradition in the art of inlaying on wood. Since the first half of the 19th century, talented Sorrento craftsmen were the first to spread this technique throughout the Neapolitan territory.
Thanks to the fame enjoyed by Sorrento as a holiday resort, many personalities from the world of politics and culture of international fame, had the opportunity to appreciate the skill of our cabinetmakers, so much so that they were hired for the restoration of the Royal Palace furnishings.
The sandals of Sorrento are the most renowned in the world for comfort and naturalness.
Still today they are made according to the most ancient techniques of the master shoemakers, using natural materials such as the finest leathers.
Don't forget the production of wine, marble, paintings on canvas, ceramic, Gelato, pasta, desserts and food in general.
